ABSTRACT

The effect of fatigue damage on the dynamic natural frequency response was studied over the entire fatigue life process for tensile-shear spot-welded joints. The results of the experimental study showed that the changes to the specimens’ natural frequency varied non-linearly with the cycle ratio or damage fraction, and that relatively large changes in the natural frequency could be measured near the end of the fatigue life.
The structural durability, structural integrity, and NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) performance of automotive structures are often dependent on the com- pliance changes of various joints and fastening locations in the automobile body. Since many ground vehicle body structures contain a large number of spot welds, com- pliance changes of spot-welded joints due to fatigue damage can have a large effect on the aforementioned structural properties. Davidson [1,2] and Lindgren et al. [3] investigated and used the elastic stiffness of a spot- welded joint to analyze and estimate fatigue life. How-

ever, compliance changes measured from static stiffness tests of joints indicate that there is not a significant stiff- ness change of the joint until there is large-scale cracking of the material. However, as demonstrated in this study for tensile-shear specimens, the increase in joint com- pliance from the mechanical degradation can be detected as slight reductions in the natural frequencies of the specimens. Studies of the dynamic characteristics of spot-welded joints have been performed in the past. For example, Wang and Lim [4] used three sets of spot-welded speci- mens to simulate the frequency response functions of numerous spot-welded structures and analyzed the natu- ral frequency. Pal and Cronin [5] found that spot-weld spacing has a significant influence on the dynamic response of the parent structure and analyzed their natu- ral frequencies. However, the effects of fatigue damage on the frequency response of spot-welded joints and the

nature of the changes to the natural frequency during the fatigue damage process have not been clearly estab- lished. Thus, it is useful to develop an understanding of the changes in the dynamic response characteristics dur- ing the fatigue damage accumulation process since the drift in the compliance of the joints typically worsens the NVH quality of the vehicle. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the relationship between the fatigue damage and the dynamic natural frequency response over the entire fatigue life of a representative spot-welded joint. It is expected that these observations may provide insight into the fatigue damage process of spot welds, and could eventually lead to a physically based damage parameter for spot-welded joints.
